Gear pumps are the simplest and most common type in the hydraulic pump family, particularly suitable for budget-conscious applications or those with modest performance requirements. Their operation is straightforward: two meshing gears rotate within the pump housing. As the gears unmesh, they create a vacuum to draw in oil; when they remesh, they force the oil out.

Gear pumps offer distinct advantages: simple and compact structure, low manufacturing cost, tolerance to oil contamination, reliable operation, and easy maintenance. They're commonly found in small excavators or auxiliary hydraulic systems. However, gear pumps have clear limitations: significant flow and pressure fluctuations (technically called "pulsation"), higher noise levels, relatively low efficiency, and typically non-adjustable flow rates.
