Axial piston pumps dominate modern excavators, with pistons arranged parallel to the drive shaft. When the swashplate (or tilt plate) angles relative to the drive shaft, the pistons reciprocate during rotation. Greater angles create longer piston strokes and larger pump displacement. Modern variable displacement piston pumps can adjust the swashplate angle in real time to modify output flow for different working conditions.
